5 Easy House Cleaning Tips for a Stress-Free Home

Cleaning and maintaining a tidy home can be a challenging task. With our busy schedules, spending hours on end cleaning isn’t an option. However, if we allow home cleaning to take a back seat, chores begin to pile up and the house becomes disorganised and messy.

Hence, it’s important to find balance between the two extremes. A fast yet efficient cleaning system helps to keep the house in order. Our homes don’t have to be impeccably clean all the time, but having a fairly tidy and organised living space gives you peace of mind and one less thing to stress about.

Here are 5 easy house cleaning tips for a stress-free home:

1. Invest in a few helpful tools that make cleaning easier and faster

Having the right cleaning tools can make all the difference! It makes cleaning faster and less stressful too.

Some useful tools that are worth investing in include:

  • Spin mop. Using old-school mops that you have to manually wring on your own can be both annoying and tiring. Spin mops have a specially designed bucket that allows you to clean and wring the mop head easily. This tool makes mopping the house less of a hassle!

  • Stand vacuum cleaner. A long, thin vacuum cleaner (wireless or with a long cord) is a great investment too. Quickly vacuum up all the dust and dirt off the floor before mopping. It’s often faster and more effective than sweeping.

  • Glass cleaner + microfibre cloth + squeegee. If you have a glass dining table or coffee table, using a glass cleaner and microfibre cloth makes cleaning a breeze. The microfibre cloth traps lint and doesn’t leave any streak marks behind on the glass. Likewise, using a squeegee for windows or mirrors also provides a streak-free finish.

2. Do some light housekeeping every day

Dedicating 20 to 30 minutes every day to some light housekeeping can keep the house tidy and prevent things such as dishes from piling up. This can be broken down into two or three 10-minute sessions spread out throughout the day.

Daily housekeeping tasks can include:

  • Making your bed

  • Sweeping or vacuuming the floor

  • Taking out the trash

  • Washing dishes

  • Wiping kitchen counters

  • Clearing tables

3. Set aside 1 to 2 hours each week to tackle weekly or monthly cleaning tasks

In addition to daily housekeeping tasks, it’s also important to set aside an hour or two for more thorough cleaning each week. Take an hour every week to settle weekly chores such as mopping the floors and washing the bathrooms. Once a month, throw in an additional hour to tackle certain tasks such as cleaning the fan and kitchen hood.

Doing this regularly is important to ensure cleaning tasks are completed in a timely manner. Without a regular routine and clear system, chores begin to pile up and the task of cleaning becomes more overwhelming.

For this, we require an organised system that tracks what needs to be done and when. If you’re wondering how to create such a system, not to worry, this is discussed in detail down below.

4. Make use of cleaning apps

Nowadays, there are tons of cleaning apps available online to help us create cleaning checklists and schedules. Two apps that are particularly useful are Tody and OurHome.

This free to use app allows you to create a room-by-room cleaning checklist. Select an area and add tasks from the task library provided. Use this comprehensive library to guide you on the tasks you need to do in each room.

Then, choose how often each task should be done. Repeat this for all the rooms in your house. Finally, based on all the tasks you have included, the app generates a daily and weekly to-do list for you.

It takes a little time to input all the tasks that need be done in your home, but thereafter, all you need to do is open the app and check what’s due. This is great to organise your chores and keep track of what needs to be done and when.

This is a useful app, especially if you have kids and you want to get them involved. Create a family in the app and add your family members. Each person can choose a cute animal emoticon to represent them.

You can then assign each family member with daily or weekly chores to do. The great thing about this app is you can also set up a reward system for your kids. Each task that you complete earns you points and you can use these points to claim rewards.

Parents can customise the rewards and the points needed to claim them. For e.g. extra TV time for 150 points. This provides a fun incentive for kids to do their chores promptly.

The family page summarises all the tasks completed by different family members. This page resembles your social media feed; you can like and comment on the tasks completed and encourage one another.

5. Get washables in sets of two

If you’re moving into a new place, always get your washables in sets of two. This includes your bed sheets, floor mats, towels, and curtains. Having a spare set makes it easy to remove, replace, and wash these items. Having single sets tend to encourage prolonged use.

Sometimes we may forget when we last changed the sheets or curtains. To avoid this, include these tasks into the Tody app and keep track of when they’re due.

Having the right tools and systems can make home cleaning faster and easier. Do give these cleaning tips a try and create a stress-free household in the process!
